Sustainability

A material whose origins we know

For us, sustainability means above all knowing where our material comes from and being able to stand behind it. We want to make the most of the North’s own natural strengths in a way that respects both the environment and future generations.

Reindeer moss is an exceptional material. It is naturally adapted to northern conditions and withstands drought, frost and large swings in temperature without watering, fertilising or other regular maintenance. When a material works well where it is used, fewer resources are needed over its entire life cycle.

HAND-PICKED WITH CARE FOR NATURE

All the reindeer moss we use comes from Finland and is harvested under permit with the landowner’s consent. It is picked by hand, without heavy machinery, so the forest floor stays as natural as possible. We take no more than about a third of the growth from any one area at a time. This leaves enough reindeer moss behind to regenerate naturally, and the gaps left by harvesting grow back within 5–7 years.

The harvested reindeer moss is packed tightly into wooden crates and delivered fresh, straight from the harvesting area to the site. Before installation, it is watered thoroughly and spread out by hand in its new home. The whole process is built on careful handling and on giving the reindeer moss the best possible conditions to thrive in its new surroundings too.

FOR BUILDING IN THE NORTH

Harvesting reindeer moss has a long tradition in Finland. For decades, it has been exported to Central Europe and Asia, among other places, for all kinds of decorative uses. We want to help create new, natural habitats for reindeer moss here in the North. When it is used on green roofs and in landscaping, it lives on as a material that is naturally adapted to exactly these conditions.

For us, a Nordic origin is more than just a label. We believe that when you build in the North, it makes sense to use materials that were shaped by the same conditions as the buildings themselves. A material adapted to the local climate lasts better, needs less maintenance and keeps its properties for a long time.

A LONG-LASTING SOLUTION

Sustainability also shows in the lifespan of our products. A reindeer moss roof protects the roof structure from UV radiation, changing weather and mechanical wear. As the roof lasts longer and needs less maintenance, the consumption of materials and resources also falls over the long term.

A reindeer moss roof also supports biodiversity by providing habitats for insects, and it plays its part in stormwater management. Its pale surface helps reduce the warming of built environments in summer, which makes it a practical solution in a changing climate, too.

For us, sustainability means products with a known origin and a long service life – products that work in northern conditions.
