Projects
METSÄNIITTY DAYCARE CENTRE, TAMPERE
The aim at Metsäniitty Daycare Centre was to bring nature-based solutions into the yard, for the sake of the wellbeing they bring. Daycare yards are often open, asphalted spaces with very little planting. Nature-based solutions can support children’s wellbeing, strengthen their connection with nature and create a varied, stimulating learning environment. The reindeer moss roof created by Norden Moss fits these goals and the whole design perfectly.
OULU HOUSING FAIR 2025
Norden Moss supplied reindeer moss roofs for six different homes at the 2025 Oulu Housing Fair in Hartaanselkä: Talo Hjemma, Huvilainen, Musica, Pesäpuu, Gård and Aava. One of the most interesting was the solid-brick Talo Hjemma, whose carport is crowned with a stunning reindeer moss roof. As a small finishing touch, a decaying log found on the plot was placed on the roof to keep the local insects happy. The fair also coincided with the hottest summer of the decade, with hardly any rain for nearly a month. The reindeer moss roofs came through the dry spell with flying colours, as reindeer moss can withstand extreme drought and scorching sun without watering.
ROCK GOLF / PICKALA ROCK RESORT
At the new golf course that opened in summer 2025, Norden Moss created reindeer moss roofs for several buildings: the clubhouse, the bike shelter, the maintenance hall and the pumping station. Reindeer moss roofs have also been installed on various buildings serving the infrastructure of Pickala Rock Resort. The maintenance-free roofs are in perfect harmony with the area’s unique forest landscape, carpeted with reindeer moss.
LEVI SNOWBIRD CHALETS
These holiday apartments at the foot of the Levi ski slopes were given reindeer moss roofs on their carports and on the shared kota-style barbecue hut. The buildings’ dark cladding is strikingly paired with the pale reindeer moss roofs, which fit perfectly into the forested landscapes of Lapland. For housing companies, the fact that reindeer moss roofs need no maintenance also makes them a carefree choice.
PRIVATE GARDEN, TAMMISAARI
Norden Moss supplied and installed almost 600 square metres of reindeer moss in a private seaside garden in Tammisaari. The reindeer moss largely replaced the forest-floor turf originally planned for the area and proved to be the best option, as water for irrigation was limited on site. It has done exceptionally well in the garden and shown just how easy it is to care for.
PRIVATE GARDEN, OULU
Norden Moss supplied reindeer moss for the planters of a garden with real character. The family had tried all sorts of options in the sun-baked planting areas, without success. Then they came up with reindeer moss – and it earned its place in the planters straight away. Its pale surface brings contrast and visual impact to the planting areas.
PAVE STUDIO
Norden Moss supplied a reindeer moss roof for Pave Studio, the new office building of Pave Architects on the banks of the Oulu River. With its distinctive look, reindeer moss is a natural fit for high-quality architecture – and thanks to its understated character, it never steals too much of the spotlight.
